HIP Progression Exercises to do while LYING
|
Hip Abduction – Lying On Side
- Lay on your non-operated side with a pillow between your knees.
- Lift your operated leg towards the ceiling.
- Hold for 5 seconds, and relax.
- Repeat 10 times.

Resisted Hip Abduction (Sideway Movement Lying on Non-Operative Side)
- Lay on your non-operated side, with a pillow between your knees.
- Place a light weight (2 lbs or 1 kg) around the ankle of your operated leg.
- Lift your operated leg up toward the ceiling.
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Lower your operated leg back down to the starting position.
- Repeat 10 times.

HIP Progression Exercises to do while STANDING
The following exercises can be done using either ankle weights or tubing.
It helps to stand next to a sturdy chair or counter and hold on for balance.

Resisted Hip Flexion Standing (High Stepping)
- Place a light weight around the ankle of your operated leg.
- Bend up your operated leg from the hip as if you are marching or high stepping. (DO NOT LIFT YOUR HIP BEYOND 90 DEGREES).
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Lower your leg down to the starting position.
- Repeat 10 times.

Resisted Hip Extension Standing (Moving Leg Backwards)
- Place a light weight around the ankle of your operated leg.
- Move your operated leg straight backwards a distance of 1 foot (30 cm).
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Return back to starting position.
- Repeat 10 times.

Resisted Hip Abduction Standing (Moving Leg Out Sideways)
It is very important that you check with your physiotherapist or surgeon before starting this hip progression exercise at home.
- Place a light weight around the ankle or your operated leg.
- Move your operated leg out sideways from your body.
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Return back to starting position.
- Repeat 10 times.

Wall Squats
It is very important that you check with your physiotherapist or surgeon before starting this hip progression exercise at home.
- Standing with your back against a wall, place your feet shoulder width apart and a foot (30 cm) away from the wall.
- Lower/slide your body down the wall so that your knees are slightly bent.
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Return back to starting position.
- Repeat 10 times.

Single Leg Stance (Balance)
It is very important that you check with your physiotherapist or surgeon before starting this hip progression exercise at home.
- Stand beside a sturdy chair or counter, and lightly touch the chair/counter with your hand for balance.
- Stand only on your operated leg.
- If you feel steady standing on your operated leg, slowly take your hand off the chair/counter.
- Try to maintain your balance for several seconds.
- Repeat 10 times.

Quad Strengthening Using Stool (Step Up in Standing)
It is very important that you check with your physiotherapist or surgeon before starting this hip progression exercise at home.
- Place the foot of your operated leg securely on a stool 6-8 inches tall (15-20cm).
- Straighten the knee of your operated leg slowly, lifting the non-operated off the floor.
- Hold for 5 seconds.
- Let your operated leg bend slowly, bringing the non-operated leg back to the floor. Make sure to keep your upper body straight.
- Repeat 10 times.
