By now, you have already talked to your family doctor about your condition, and they have arranged for you to have an orthopaedic assessment. It’s a good idea to have someone (a family member or friend) come with you to the orthopaedic assessment to listen and take notes.
At this visit, an orthopaedic specialist will assess your condition and figure out your next steps and treatment options. If you are recommended for surgery, you will be placed on the waitlist for surgery.
Hip and knee replacement surgery is currently offered in four District Health Authorities in Nova Scotia: Capital Health (Halifax Infirmary Hospital and Dartmouth General Hospital), Pictou County (Aberdeen Hospital), Annapolis Valley (Annapolis Valley Regional Hospital) and Cape Breton (Cape Breton Regional Hospital).
If surgery is not recommended, you may be referred back to your family doctor to discuss your non-surgical options and the best way to manage your health condition.
