Patients who undergo hip or knee replacement surgery may require a blood transfusion.
The blood management program is a way to bank your own blood so it can be used if you need a transfusion during your surgery.
Your doctors and surgeons have more information about blood transfusions – be sure to ask them during your Pre-Admission Visit or when you see your surgeon.
The purpose of the blood management/conservation program is to:
- Reduce and/or remove the need for blood transfusion during planned surgery
- Educate patients about the risks and benefits of blood transfusions and other blood alternatives
